One of my favorite books was chosen as the Caldecott Winner this year. This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. I love the book and I really love that it won the Caldecott.
This took me back to my days in grad school and reading only award winning books for this one professor. Thing is, reading by force-not so much fun. So now that I am not being forced to read them, I've decided to tackle a few Caldecott Winners and Honors on my own! I'm also reading a few Newbery Winners, but I'll save that for another day! I bet you have a few winners around your house and in your classroom! Where the Wild Things Are-1964 winner! Officer Buckle and Gloria-1996 winner! Fables-1981 winner! The Snowy Day-1963 winner! Needless to say, I'll be starting a basket in my classroom!
I have fallen in love with this 1956 Caldecott Honor, Play With Me by Marie Hall Ets. T and I have read it again and again. Dare I say-this book is timeless. The little girl tries to play with the animals in the meadow, but they all go away. When she sits quietly and still, the animals slowly come back. The pictures are amazing-simple and beautiful. The book is just lovely and is meant to be shared.
Another favorite, and the 2011 Caldecott Winner, is A Sick Day For Amos McGee by Phillip Stead and Erin Stead.
I have recommended this treasure before. Empathy, friendship, love. This story is heartwarming. The discussion possibilities for home or classroom are endless!
